Powers

Edwin doesn't awaken for much of the story due to a seal placed on him as a child, but when he does, his abilities are electrokinesis and "Intuition". His powers are designed to mirror his brother, Viktor, especially since Viktor had a lot of influence on Edwin's perception of psychic powers.

Electrokinesis is the psychic control of electrical energy. He can generate electrical charges that he can then control, but only within a certain radius. Like his brother, he can also explode when overwhelmed.

"Intuition" enables him to sense when his loved ones are in distress, and teleport to their aid. Edwin's powers awoke after Viktor disappeared - the stress of his missing brother on top of finals and poor interactions with fellow students led him to a massive breakdown that broke through his seal and forced his awakening.

Complete Biography

Content Warning: This biography deals heavy in self-destructive behaviour (namely self harm and attempted suicide), domestic/religious abuse, and generally unhealthy actions. Proceed with caution.

This page is also really fucking long, so if you wanna read it all at once, it's gonna take a minute.

Edwin was born in Ontario, Pennsylvania in the "Clark family practice" cult - a kind of "doomsday"-esque cult that encouraged self-destructive behaviour as a means to repent for sin and other percieved wrong-doing. He was born to the leaders of the cult, Marie and Edwin II, alongside his twin sister, Anya.

Although Edwin was wanted, unlike his sister, as the heir he had heavy expectations placed on his shoulders from a young age. Expectations he was unable to fulfill due to undiagnosed autism and ADHD, combined with his parents'... nonstandard... teaching practices. No matter what he did, he just couldn't seem to retain the information. A lot of time was spent trying to make him understand. Nothing worked.

His father chose to try to shift focus to Anya. It wasn't conventional for a girl to take the role of the heir, but it didn't seem like there was another choice since Edwin was doing so poorly. Anya's schooling became more difficult, and she kept succeeding everywhere Edwin failed, and more Their mother began to foster resentment between the two, mentioning off-handedly to Edwin that it seemed like she was stealing his spot, and that he'd better earn their love fast or he''ll be forgotten.

When they were 10, Edwin was meant to do a coming of age ceremony in which the eldest was crucified, to symbolise the Clarks' close affiliation with God. Edwin's place was taken by Anya. It failed catastrophically, leaving his sister comatose for almost a month. She was doted on. Of course she was.

Anya developed unholy powers that stung everyone. The reverie everyone felt towards her miraculous recovery disappeared almost instantly, and suddenly Edwin was back in his rightful position. Nonetheless, Marie continued to foster hatred and jealousy between them as Anya began running away. Edwin, fuelled by frustration and how often Anya seemed to get away with horrible behaviour, happened to see Marie trying to convince their father to give someone else custody of Anya. Seeing an opportunity to get rid of her once for all and thinking if she wanted out so bad then she really should just leave, Edwin forged signatures on those documents.

As time went on, things didn't improve. His father told him Anya had died and gone to Heaven. His mother seemed to lose her marbles entirely. His father stopped being the righteous man he thought he was. His mother began talking nonsense. Edwin began to see them for the people they really were; a pathetic man who pretended he had no power over his children, and a crazy lady with a strange vendetta that she began taking out on him. He realised his mother probably never loved him. He realised that his father probably did, but had a stupid fucking way of showing it. Edwin wasn't quite disillusioned, but this didn't seem like behaviour God would've condoned.

At 15, Edwin was sent on a trip. When he returned, his family was dead and there was talk in the news about Anya having been released from the hospital after a grievous accident. He immediately went to see her and learned she'd changed her name to Damien and was calling herself a boy. Damien had just bought a van and was about to leave. Edwin begged him to let him come with. In spite of everything, Damien allowed him to do so.

While on the road, Edwin realised that because their parents never finished his schooling, no college would ever take him. He'd set his heart on becoming a law student, and so he decided he needed to finish school. He struggled a lot at first, but Damien helped him study, using things he'd learned from an outsider school.

Meanwhile, Damien began engaging in extremely risky behaviour. He got drunk from time to time, hung around sketchy people. Nothing ever seemed to happen, but it was worrying, and as his self destruction worsened, Edwin found himself feeling entirely responsible. He did his best to take care of his brother, even when it wasn't necessarily wanted. And Damien did the same for him.

Eventually Edwin decided to move out, tired of the lack of a real home. He found a home and moved, though made it a habit to send Damien an allowance every so often, wanting to make sure he'd always be taken care of. It's what big brothers do, after all, and Edwin hadn't been a very good brother. He wanted to make up for it.

Edwin coasted for a little while as he researched colleges. He became set on trying to get into either Odin or Yew and began studying for the SAT, calling his brother - now known as Viktor, rather than Damien, which he couldn't help being a little glad for - to help study. With enough work, Edwin managed to get some truly exceptional scores. Since his grades were also really good (thanks to Viktor), Edwin got into Yew.

At Yew, Edwin met a girl named Casey. They became close, bonding over the difficult and stressful work they were assigned. They often worked together on assignments. Edwin never felt confident around people, but he felt like he didn't have to pretend to be someone he wasn't around her. They worked hard together and ultimately began dating at the beginning of sophomore year. Casey learned things about Edwin that he had been too scared to tell anyone else. She learned of his shame about how his family treated his brother. How he treated his brother. In turn, he comforted her as best as he could about how scared she was of this godforsaken college. She felt her only option was to succeed or she'd be worthless. Edwin related.

And then she transitioned. Casey's new name was Lukas. Edwin loved him, still. He wanted to stay together. He did. But he wasn't gay, but god, he still loved him, even when Lukas was passing he was still so attracted to him. His internalised homophobia began to manifest as wanting Lukas to hurt him. Terrified but still deeply in love but still terrified, Edwin pulled away a little.

He wanted it to work. He really, really wanted it to work.

But it just wasn't meant to be.

Edwin sat Lukas down, and it worked fine for him because he wanted to talk, too. Edwin opened up about the belief he grew up with that homosexuality was a sin, and that he knows Lukas doesn't share that belief, but he couldn't bear the thought of Lukas going to hell. Lukas was frustrated, initially thinking it was transphobia, but disheartened at the realisation that it was homophobia. They mutually broke up.

Unluckily, Viktor broke up with his own partner around the same time. Viktor was the only person Edwin felt he could talk to about this, but he took his breakup so fucking hard that Edwin thought it better to avoid the topic of relationships for awhile. In the meantime he drowned himself in his studies. Occasionally Viktor brought him food.
